3 PM EDT Monday, July 7, 2008

The Greater Miami Chapter of the AMS met at 3 PM Monday, July 7, 2008, in the Media Room of the National Hurricane Center. 8 dues-paying members attended along with 15 guests. Executive Director Derek Ortt, President Neal Dorst, and Treasurer Rusty Pfost attended as officers.

Neal Dorst opened the meeting and announced that elections would be held, and distributed ballots to dues-paying members. Treasurer Pfost announced that the local chapter treasury contained $312.10.

Dr. Jack Beven then introduced the speaker for the meeting, Katharine (Kathy) Winters of the 45th Weather Squadron at Cape Canaveral. Kathy's talk, entitled 'Forecasting Operations at the Kennedy Space Center' was an inside look at the importance of weather support for the space missions at the Cape. She provided interesting details on the importance of tropical cyclone, thunderstorm, hail, wind, wind shear, and temperature forecasts for launch and landing operations of the space shuttle. Weather information becomes even more critical through the next couple of years because there are still several more shuttle missions to go before the program ends completely in 2010. She showed many pictures, including some of hail damage to spacecraft, and concluded the talk with two weather forecasting scenarios to show exactly how weather support is provided to mission control. She stated that the new probabilities NHC uses for tropical cyclones and the new graphical tropical weather outlook are products used extensively by her unit in day-to-day operations.

After the talk, there was a short question and answer period, followed by a tour of the National Weather Service (NHC and the Weather Forecast Office) for interested persons by Dr. Jack Beven of NHC. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 415 PM EDT.

Executive Director Ortt announced the results of the election:

Executive Director
Ortt 7, abstain 1

Dorst 8, no other votes

Vice President
Zheng 8, no other votes

Dixon 8, no other votes

Pfost 7, Gore 1

So the officers will serve another one year term.

Respectfully submitted, Tuesday, July 08, 2008, by Treasurer Rusty Pfost
